What Support Do Small Businesses Actually Need?
Network Navigator · July 13, 2026
Most regions do not have a shortage of programs. They have a shortage of routing. Founders move through a lot of motion and still end up where they started.
The gap between ask and offer
Founders ask for customers, cash flow, and someone who will answer a specific question this week. Ecosystems mostly offer curriculum, pitch events, and networking.
Both are useful. Only one is what was requested.
Four things that consistently move outcomes
- Sequencing: matching the resource to the stage instead of to whoever is enrolling.
- Warm handoffs: a named person on the other end, not a referral list.
- Follow-through measurement: tracking whether the referral turned into a relationship.
- Access to demand: procurement, contracts, and customers, not only capital.
What to fund differently
Fund the connective layer, not only the programs. A shared intake, a common record of who was referred where, and accountability for the handoff cost far less than another cohort and raise the yield of everything already in the field.
This is the receivership gap: the space between providers where founders are dropped. Closing it is infrastructure work, not programming work.
