Why Every Ecosystem Needs a Handoff SLA

Network Navigator · February 4, 2026

A referral is a promise. Most ecosystems never check whether the promise was kept.

A handoff service level agreement is the simplest way to fix that. It is not software. It is an agreement between providers about what happens after the introduction.

The four terms

A workable handoff SLA needs only four commitments.

  • Acknowledge the referral within two business days.
  • Make first contact with the founder within five business days.
  • Report the outcome back to the referring provider within 30 days.
  • Return the founder to the router when the fit is wrong, instead of letting them stall.

What to measure

Track three numbers: acknowledgment rate, contact rate, and outcome rate. If acknowledgment is high and contact is low, the problem is capacity. If contact is high and outcomes are low, the problem is matching.

What to do when it breaks

Treat a missed handoff as a system signal, not a personal failure. The most common cause is a provider receiving founders who were never a fit for their program. That is a routing correction, and it is cheap to make once you can see it.
