A monthly look at the Birmingham entrepreneurial ecosystem. What happened, what's working, and where to plug in.
What we heard in July
The same sentence came up in almost every conversation we had in July, in different words each time: I did not know that existed. Not from founders who are disengaged. From founders who are already showing up, already asking, already in rooms. Birmingham does not have a shortage of resources. It has a shortage of awareness, and the two problems do not get solved the same way.
That is the gap this platform was built to close, and July gave us a clear read on how far there is to go. 2,317 sessions on the site. 4,033 tracked actions. 263 active provider listings. 31 events on the public calendar right now. The inventory is there. Getting the right founder to the right line on it, at the moment they need it, is still the work.

What we heard
The signal
Fragmentation is not a resource problem. It is a routing problem.
Founders keep telling us they cannot find the help they need, and providers keep telling us their programs are under-enrolled. Both are true at the same time. That is what fragmentation looks like in practice: the support exists, it is just not visible from where the founder is standing. Every month we hear about a founder who spent six weeks looking for something that was two clicks away in the directory. We are treating awareness as a design problem, not a marketing problem. If a founder has to already know the name of a program to find it, the directory has failed.

Where the ecosystem runs out of expertise
A hair care founder we spoke with this month can get help all day long with selling products. The moment she asked about government contracting, the conversation stopped. Not because anyone was unwilling. Because nobody in the room had done it in her industry. This is the next layer of the gap: general small business support is broad and available, and industry-specific expertise is thin and unevenly distributed. A founder in personal care, food, trades, or logistics who wants to move into contracting, wholesale, or licensing runs out of road faster than a founder in a well-served category. We are mapping where that expertise actually sits in this region, and where it does not exist yet. If you have it, we want to know.

What another city could copy
Stop counting programs. Start counting industries you can actually serve.
Most ecosystem inventories are counted by organization: how many accelerators, how many lenders, how many technical assistance providers. That number always looks healthy. Try counting a different way. Pick five industries that actually employ people in your region, then ask who in your ecosystem can advise a founder in that industry on their specific next step, not on business fundamentals. Government contracting for a personal care product line. Wholesale terms for a specialty food maker. Bonding for a trades operator. The count gets small fast, and it tells you where to recruit rather than where to promote. That is the exercise we ran in July and it changed our provider recruitment list.

The C.O.R.E. Business Evaluation now scores each pillar on its own
Capacity, Operations, Resources, and Execution are now scored independently instead of rolling into a single readiness number. A founder can be strong on execution and thin on operations, and the plan they get back should say so. The per-pillar view is on the founder dashboard, and it is what makes the follow-up specific enough to act on this week.

TA Provider of the Month: Urban Impact
Urban Impact is the nonprofit behind the revitalization of the Historic 4th Avenue Business District, and they run two things founders should know by name: the IMPACT Loan Fund and the BE BHM Accelerator.
